Rivers
Creating a trout highway near Alfreton
The problem
Trout populations area key indicator of river health and crucial for maintaining biodiversity. We were approached to help wild trout bypass a weir in a brook near Alfreton
The plan
We spent a day at the site, observing the river, water movement and sheltered habitat for trout. We explored alternative water courses for the river, taking several environmental factors in to account.
The solution
We used tree branches and other woody material to redirect the river along an old, seasonal stream, bypassing the weir. The addition of natural barriers created a slip stream, directing water and trout to the new waterway.
The results
The trout have been successfully directed to their new breeding grounds, beyond the weir. THTC will monitor their habitat, behavious and river health.
